Best Laser Engraver for a Small Business: Our Research Picks (2026)

By Kerf & Press EditorialResearched by the Kerf & Press teamUpdated How we research & testResearched lab test pending

The short answer

Our research picks — lab testing starts Oct 2026: the enclosed xTool S1 40W is the best-researched all-rounder for a home-based shop; the Creality Falcon2 40W is the budget pick if you can house an open-frame laser safely; the OMTech Polar Lite 55W is the CO2 pick for acrylic; and the xTool F1 Ultra covers bare metal plus wood.

The number

5 picks, 0 tested

Every pick here is chosen from manufacturer specs and documentation. Lab testing starts October 2026 and results will replace the pending charts below.

A full spec comparison table of the five picks appears below the article. You can also build your own in the Compare tool.

Best researched all-rounder for a home shop: xTool S1 40W

If you sell wood signs, ornaments, leather patches, slate and coated tumblers from home, the S1 40W checks the most boxes on paper:

  • Enclosed and Class 1, per xTool, so the beam is contained while the lid is closed. That matters in a spare room or shared house.
  • 40 W diode rated for 18 mm of cherry in one pass (15 mm plywood), per xTool’s spec table.
  • 498 × 319 mm bed, extended to 470 × 3,000 mm with pass-through, and a conveyor option.
  • Autofocus, flame detection and an emergency stop built in.
  • Software flexibility: xTool’s own app plus native LightBurn support. LightBurn’s documentation lists the S1 among the three xTool models it supports natively, and the S1 was not on the list of models affected by xTool’s June 2026 firmware change.

Watch-outs: like every blue diode, it cannot cut clear acrylic. Bare-metal marking needs the separately sold 2 W IR module. It still makes smoke, so plan for venting or a purifier. At $1,699 it costs well over twice the open-frame Falcon2 40W.

Best researched budget pick: Creality Falcon2 40W

The Falcon2 40W offers the most diode laser per dollar in our research: 40 W of rated optical power, a 400 × 415 mm bed and built-in air assist for $639 on Creality’s store (sale price, September 2026). Creality lists LightBurn, LaserGRBL and its own Falcon Design Space as supported software.

It is an open-frame, FDA Class 4 laser. That changes the real price. You will need glasses rated for 455 nm for everyone in the room, a non-flammable surface, a fire extinguisher, fume extraction and, ideally, an enclosure. Focus is manual and there is no camera. Creality’s cut claims are also inconsistent on its own page (“20mm wood or 30mm acrylic” in one place, “20mm cork” in another), so treat them as ceilings.

Pick it if you have a garage or workshop, want LightBurn, and would rather spend the savings on accessories. Our xTool vs Creality Falcon comparison covers this trade-off in detail.

Best researched pick for acrylic and signs: OMTech Polar Lite 55W

If acrylic signs, cake toppers, wedding decor or glass etching are central to your shop, you need a CO2 laser; no diode cuts clear acrylic. Among the CO2 machines we have researched, the Polar Lite 55W stands out on value:

  • 55 W CO2 tube (10,600 nm), which acrylic, glass and wood absorb readily.
  • Built-in 2 L water chiller, so there is no separate chiller or bucket to buy.
  • 510 × 300 mm bed, front and rear pass-through slot, autofocus and a 5 MP camera.
  • LightBurn compatible, with RDWorks included. The exhaust fan and pipe are included.

Watch-outs: OMTech lists the glass tube’s estimated life at about 11,000 hours, so a replacement tube is a future cost. It weighs 41 kg. Max material height is 17 mm with the workbed in place (51 mm without). OMTech says the machine is FDA certified but does not state its class on the product page, so treat it as a Class 4 laser if the lid is opened.

Close alternative: the xTool P2S ($2,999) offers a larger 600 × 305 mm bed, dual 16 MP cameras and LiDAR autofocus. It works best inside xTool Studio: xTool’s own article says LightBurn cannot use its cameras, autofocus or pass-through, and LightBurn’s documentation lists the P2S among the models whose June 2026 firmware removed LightBurn compatibility.

Best researched pick for metal and tumblers: xTool F1 Ultra

For jewelry, dog tags, knives, metal business cards and fast tumbler personalization, a galvo with a fiber source is the fastest route on paper. The F1 Ultra combines a 20 W fiber laser (1,064 nm) and a 20 W blue diode in one galvo machine:

  • The fiber source marks and engraves bare stainless, aluminum, brass, silver, gold and titanium, per xTool’s material list. The diode handles wood and leather.
  • Rated at 10,000 mm/s within a 220 × 220 mm field (220 × 500 mm with the conveyor).
  • 16 MP camera, autofocus and a 145 mm max material height.
  • Listed as compatible with xTool’s RA2 Pro rotary for tumblers.

Watch-outs: it is a Class 4 laser; everyone nearby needs glasses rated for both 455 nm and 1,064 nm. The field is small, so large signs are out. Its wood and acrylic cut ratings are multi-pass. It runs in xTool Studio; LightBurn support was removed by a June 2026 firmware update, according to LightBurn’s docs. See Galvo vs Gantry.

Best researched pick for a spare-bedroom starter: xTool M2

If you are testing a small product line at home and want the lowest-risk setup, the M2 is an enclosed Class 1 diode (TÜV SÜD certified, per xTool) with a 426 × 320 mm bed, autofocus and cameras, at $999 for 20 W or $599 for 10 W. xTool rates the 20 W version for 10 mm wood and 8 mm dark acrylic cuts. An optional 3 W IR module adds bare-metal marking, and an inkjet print module is available at extra cost with its own ink running costs.

Watch-outs: half the power of the S1 40W, no clear acrylic, and it still needs fume handling.

How we chose (without testing yet)

We are upfront about this: none of these picks is based on our own measurements. Here is what we did instead.

  1. Started from what small shops sell. We grouped common products (wood, acrylic, coated drinkware, bare metal, leather) and matched each to the laser wavelength that can physically process it. That rules machines in or out before any brand comparison.
  2. Used manufacturer specs only as published. Power, work area, cut ratings, speed, safety class and price come from each brand’s product page. Where a brand’s own page contradicts itself (Creality’s cork versus wood claim), we say so.
  3. Weighted safety and setup. Enclosed Class 1 machines scored better for home shops because they remove eye-protection and fire-containment work. Open-frame machines were considered only with the extra cost of making them safe.
  4. Checked software openness. We read official xTool support articles and LightBurn documentation on which machines work with which software, including the June 2026 xTool firmware change.
  5. Looked at total cost, not sticker price. Consumables (CO2 tubes), required accessories and extra modules count.
  6. Excluded what we could not verify. Machines without clear published specs, or not yet in our database, did not make the list.

What we did not use: Amazon star ratings, affiliate commission rates, sponsored placements or anyone else’s review scores. We earn a commission from some links, and that never changes the picks. See our editorial policy and how we test.

Frequently asked questions

Have you tested these laser engravers?

Not yet. These are research picks based on manufacturer specs, official documentation and owner reports. Lab testing starts in October 2026. Until then, every chart on this page shows a pending state, and we will update the picks if test results disagree with the specs.

What is the best laser engraver for an Etsy business?

It depends on what you sell. For wood, leather and coated tumblers, a 20 to 40 W enclosed diode such as the xTool S1 40W is the flexible default. For acrylic signs and cake toppers, you need a CO2 laser. For bare-metal jewelry and tags, you need fiber.

How much should I spend on my first business laser?

Our picks range from $599 to $2,999 before accessories. Budget extra for fume extraction, a rotary if you do drinkware, safety glasses for Class 4 machines, and materials. The Startup Cost Calculator adds these up.

Is a Glowforge a good small-business laser?

Glowforge's CO2 machines are well known for ease of use, but the Plus HD lists at $6,999 and Glowforge's software is browser-based and needs internet. On published specs, lower-cost CO2 machines offer similar or larger work areas, so Glowforge did not make this shortlist.

Why is there no Creality Falcon2 Pro or xTool P2S pick?

Both are strong candidates on paper. The P2S (55 W CO2, $2,999) is a closer call against the OMTech Polar Lite: it adds dual cameras and xTool Studio integration, while the Polar Lite is cheaper and LightBurn-first. We have not added the Falcon2 Pro to our database yet.
