Is DTF Printing Profitable? In-House Printer vs Buying Gang Sheets

Short answer: DTF can be profitable, but owning the printer only pays off at steady volume. In-house consumables are cheap, around $0.67 per square foot in our example. Bought gang sheets from U.S. suppliers cost $2.50–$3.02 per square foot at the prices we found. The gap looks huge until you add your time, the printer’s price and the daily white-ink maintenance. Below is the math, with every assumption spelled out.

What goes into a DTF print

DTF (direct-to-film) prints CMYK plus a white underbase onto PET film. You then coat the wet print with hot-melt adhesive powder, cure it, and heat-press it onto the garment. So the cost per print is film + ink + powder + energy, plus waste from test prints and cleaning cycles, plus your time.

In-house cost per square foot

Film prices vary a lot: DTF OneStop listed a 13 in × 328 ft roll at $40.00 on sale, which is $0.11 per sq ft. Ink coverage is the biggest swing factor. A light, mostly-text design uses far less than a full-color photo with a solid white underbase.

What bought gang sheets cost

Gang sheets are one big print you fill with as many designs as fit. You pay by area.

Prices exclude shipping. Ninja Transfers lists stacking quantity discounts of 20% (15–49 pieces) up to 50% at 250+ pieces, which works out to $1.44 per sq ft. That’s close to our in-house cost including labor ($1.33).

Break-even: when does a printer pay for itself?

Assumptions: Procolored F13 Panda + curing oven bundle at $2799.00 (sale price on Procolored’s site, Sept 2026). Compared with Modfirst’s 22 × 60 sheet at $2.67 per sq ft. In-house cost $1.33 per sq ft including labor.

• Savings per sq ft: $2.67 − $1.33 = $1.34
• Break-even: $2799.00 ÷ $1.34 ≈ 2,092 sq ft, or about 228 sheets of 22 × 60 in, or about 2,510 full-front 10 × 12 in prints

This ignores printhead replacements and parts, so real break-even comes later. Prices for replacement heads vary by model; ask your seller before you buy.

Per-shirt profit: bought vs in-house

Assumptions: Etsy sale at $24.00 + $5.00 shipping. Gildan G5000 blank at $2.59 (JonesTshirts sale price). Label $5.00 and mailer $0.50 (assumptions). 5 minutes of pressing and packing at $20.00/hour. Full-front design 10 × 12 in = 0.83 sq ft.

The maintenance reality: white ink

White DTF ink is the reason many owners regret buying too early.

• Why it clogs: Coastal Business Supplies explains that white ink contains titanium dioxide, which is much heavier than the carrier liquid. When agitation stops, even for a few hours, it settles and can harden in nozzles, dampers and lines.
• Daily routine they recommend: shake or agitate white ink for 30–60 seconds every day, print a nozzle check or small test daily, cap the head at shutdown, and keep the room at 40–60% relative humidity and 68–82°F (20–28°C).
• Every 2–4 weeks: inspect and clean or replace white ink filters and dampers.
• Idle time is the enemy: printers left idle for 5–7 days frequently show multi-channel clogs on restart, according to the same guide.

Printer makers are designing around this. Procolored says the F13 has a white ink stirring, circulation and filtration system, and that it cleans the printhead automatically every 10 hours while powered on, using about 1 ml of ink a day. Epson says its SureColor G6070 production printer (MSRP $13,995) needs “just a few minutes” of upkeep each week. Either way, someone has to be there, and that cleaning ink is part of our 10% waste allowance.

When in-house DTF makes sense

• You print most days, so the white ink keeps moving anyway.
• You sell many small or custom one-off designs, where ganging and shipping delays from suppliers hurt.
• You can sell transfers too (to other crafters), which spreads the printer cost.
• You have a climate-controlled room and can handle powder and curing fumes safely per the manufacturer’s instructions.

When to keep buying transfers

• Fewer than about 25 sq ft a week.
• Seasonal business with idle weeks.
• You’d rather spend time on design and marketing than printer maintenance.
• You’re still testing which designs sell.
